Marama is an experienced inhouse public sector lawyer specialising in Māori Development, Māori Crown Relations, Treaty Settlements and Te Tiriti o Waitangi matters. At Te Tari Ture o te Karauna Crown Law she leads a team of very dedicated and experienced Senior Crown Counsel and Crown Counsel who focus on developing system-wide advice and guidance for lawyers and decision-makers across the public service and identifying and managing systemic legal risks, trends and developments.
Marama holds a conjoint degree in Laws and Commerce (majoring in Māori Business) from Victoria University of Wellington. She has also just completed a fulltime full immersion Te Reo Māori Diploma at Te Wānanga o Raukawa. Marama is an active member of Te Hunga Rōia Māori, the Māori Law Society and is a founding member and Manukura (leader) of Te Kura Huna, a rōpū (group) of Māori legal practitioners in the public sector. In 2023 she was highly commended in the Inhouse Lawyers Association New Zealand Lawyer of the Year category and was a Finalist for the Innovation Award.
